Appointment of head of UN WOMEN - statement (EN)
The spokesperson of High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice President of the Commission Catherine Ashton issued the following statement today:
" The High Representative warmly welcomes the appointment by UN Secretary General Ban Kimoon of the former Chilean President Ms. Michelle Bachelet as the head of United Nations Women (UN Women) – the newly created entity to promote women’s rights and gender equality.
The EU has strongly supported the creation of UN Women in order to strengthen the capacity, accountability and the effectiveness of the United Nations in the area of gender equality.
Ms. Bachelet as a first female President of Chile strongly vigorously promoted gender equality during her tenure. The High Representative is convinced that Ms. Bachelet’s personal qualities, as well as her years of political experience will ensure that UN Women is provided with a strong and visionary leadership form the very earliest stages of its existence ."
