Greens/EFA
welcome Hungarian "yes" vote on EU
Daniel Cohn-Bendit, Co-President of the Green/EFA
group in the European Parliament, today welcomed the massive "yes" vote of the Hungarians on membership in the
European Union:
"The Green/EFA group in the European Parliament is very pleased with the
impressive vote by the Hungarians in favour of their country's accession to the European Union.
"After this unequivocal mandate by its people, we expect the Hungarian government to make a substantial
contribution to the further integration and development of the European Union. Hungarians have given a strong
signal that they support common European policies and we hope Hungary will join the forces in support of a
Common Foreign and Security Policy promoting peace, social justice and ecological responsibility in this
world.
"Europe is also a means to ease Hungary's tensions with the neighbouring states about
the status of the Hungarian minorities. Being now all Europeans, a satisfying solution to these problems will be
much more easily achieved in the framework of the European Union.
"Having voted in favour of
Hungary's entry into the Union last week in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, the Green/EFA group hopes
that Hungary will become a strong ally in the construction of a prosperous, social, ecological and sustainable
Europe.
"Hungary's referendum, the third in the ten EU countries hoping to join the EU in
May next year, showed once again that the population in the accession countries is massively supporting EU
enlargement."
