(28/11/06) Afvalverbranding krijgt geen groen label

Het uiteindelijke doel van een regelgeving moet het verminderen van de totale hoeveelheid afval zijn. Het verbranden ervan moet de laatste optie zijn. Vermindering, hergebruik en recyclage genieten de voorkeur. Pogingen om de verbranding een groen label te geven werden afgeblokt. De ovens moeten bovendien voldoen aan zeer strikte normen. De milieucommissie van het EP meent ook dat de weg die schadelijk afval heeft afgelegd moet zijn na te gaan. In januari is het stemming in plenaire. Er is een goede basis gelegd.

Waste reduction must be key principle guiding EU waste rules revision

Following today's vote in the EP Environment Committee on the Waste Framework Directive, Welsh MEP and member of the Environment Committee Jill Evans said:

"Today's vote sets out a positive approach for revising the EU's waste management rules. The Environment Committee has recommended stabilising the levels of waste generation by 2012, based on 2008 levels. While clearly reducing our waste must be the ultimate goal, it is crucial that we start, sooner rather than later, to prevent an increase in the amount of waste generated.

"The committee also made clear that incineration must be viewed as one of the last options for waste management in the EU. Reduction, reuse and recycling must be the priorities guiding our approach to waste. The committee rejected attempts to give incineration a green label as 'recovery' and introduced strict efficiency criteria which incinerators must meet.

"Another important proposal from the committee is for the introduction of traceability requirements for hazardous waste and a requirement for permits for all treatment plants for hazardous waste. Today's vote provides a positive basis for revising the EU's waste rules with a view to protecting the environment and we hope the EP will support the committee's recommendation in the plenary vote in January."
