(27/09/07) Myanmar: China moet druk uitoefenen voor vreedzame oplossing

De officiële verklaringen van de Chinese autoriteiten over de toestand in Myanmar mogen dan al goed klinken, ze worden niet gevolgd door actie. China had een VN-resolutie die een vreedzame oplossing voor Myanmar vraagt niet mogen blokkeren. Het lijkt er sterk op dat China in zijn binnenste hoopt dat er een militaire oplossing komt in Myanmar. De EU moet er bij China op aandringen dat het alles in het werk stelt om een bloedbad in zijn buurland te voorkomen. Als China ernstig genomen wil worden op het internationale politieke toneel, dan moet het hier de kans grijpen om een uitbarsting van het geweld in Myanmar te voorkomen.

China must bring pressure to bear on Burmese regime for peaceful solution

Commenting on the current situation in Burma and the role of China, German Green MEP Helga Trüpel said:
"The constructive involvement of China is crucial to ensuring a peaceful solution of the present crisis in Burma but unfortunately the official declarations from Beijing on the need for peace and stability are made to ring hollow by its actions. We condemn the fact that China blocked a UN Security Council declaration that sought to criticise the reaction of the Burmese military junta to the peaceful mass demonstrations.

"Clearly despite its official declarations, China is deep down hoping for stability to be brought by the guns of the Burmese military junta. The EU must step up its pressure on China, so that the international community can prevent a blood bath in Burma. If China wants to be considered and respected as part of the international community, it should support all efforts for a peaceful solution of the crisis, in order to prevent an escalation of the violence in Burma."
