Breakthrough in UN sponsored talks: Cyprus peace plan is the first fruit of
enlargement
The Green/EFA Group in the European Parliament today welcomed the
breakthrough in negotiations on the reunification of Cyprus reached under the auspices of UN General Secretary
Kofi Annan. Monica Frassoni, Co-President of the Green/EFA Group said:
"The breakthrough
reached at the Cyprus talks is the first fruit of EU enlargement. The Greens/EFA have long believed that the
only chance of solving the division of Cyprus was through the enlargement of Europe. Events today have proven
that we were right to push the EU to play its full role and to clearly state to both Turkey and the Turkish
Cypriots the importance of a political and balanced solution for their future in the Union. This was a decisive
element with significant political weight and allowed the UN to carry out its work of finding agreement between
the two sides."
