De fractieleiders van het EP gaven vandaag aan Parlementsvoorzitter Borrel de opdracht om bij de Staats- en Regeringsleiders na te gaan of zij bereid zijn de regeling Brussel-Straatsburg te herzien. Daarvoor moet het Verdrag worden gewijzigd. Dat bepaalt dat er jaarlijks in Straatsburg 12 zittingen moeten zijn. Frankrijk stelt een veto tegen Brussel als enige zetel van het EP. De Groenen vragen dat het Parlement een initiatiefrapport opstelt en kijken uit naar de keuze van de fractieleiders.

Greens demand parliamentary debate on the seat of the EP

The Greens/EFA group in the European Parliament today called for an initiative report and a parliamentary debate to be organised on the issue of the seat of the EP. Speaking after the demand was made in the Conference of Presidents, Group Co-President Monica Frassoni said:

"The Greens call for the discussion on the seat of the European Parliament to be reopened in the framework of a parliamentary initiative, with an initiative report, a parliamentary debate and a vote in plenary.. We need to debate this question in a parliamentary rather than a clandestine way.

Today, the group leaders decided to give the EP president Josep Borrell the task of orally addressing the Heads of State and Government during the European Council and asking if they are prepared to consider changing the existing provisions of the Treaty in respect of the European Parliament.

We supported this decision, but it will not be enough. Therefore we asked that our request for an initiative report and a vote in the plenary is discussed in the Conference of Presidents in Strasbourg on Thursday next week and that the group leaders take position."
