(07/11/06) Nucleaire energie verlicht klimaatproblemen niet!

Het rapport 'World Energy Outlook' dat vandaag is gepubliceerd door het Internationaal Energie Agentschap verheerlijkt nucleaire energie als zou dit de oplossing betekenen voor de klimaatverandering. Er wordt gemakshalve geen rekening gehouden met de problemen van nucleair afval en met de opslag ervan. Dit is onverantwoordelijk en houdt grote risico's in. Bovendien spreekt het rapport zichzelf tegen: zelfs met een aanzienlijke toename van nucleaire energie, zal dit nog geen voldoende afname betekenen van de uitstoot van broeikasgassen. Die uitstoot verlagen kan het best door te streven naar energie-efficiëntie, het gebruik van hernieuwbare energiebronnen en het overschakelen naar minder milieubelastende brandstoffen.

IEA nuclear preoccupation will not solve our climate problems



Commenting the 'World Energy Outlook', released today by the International Energy Agency (IEA) Claude Turmes and Rebecca Harms , energy spokespersons of the Greens in the European Parliament, said:

"The International Energy Agency continues to propagate the dangerous myth that nuclear power holds the answer to the problems of climate change. Today's 'World Energy Outlook' even refers to the further development of nuclear power as being 'sustainable'. Considering the unresolved problems with nuclear waste treatment and storage, along with the rollback of the non-proliferation treaty, this is simply irresponsible. There should be no mistaking the fact that expanding nuclear power goes hand-in-hand with an increased risk.

"The conclusions of the IEA on the role nuclear can play in the fight against climate change also run counter to the scenarios presented in its own Outlook. They show that, even with substantial increases, nuclear energy would not play a significant role in the reduction of CO2 emissions. 90% of the reductions will be achieved with efficiency, renewables and fuel switching.

"It is time the IEA stopped kowtowing to big energy firms and pro-nuclear governments. There are already viable energy alternatives in the fight against climate change. Only a strategy that puts energy efficiency and renewable energy at its heart, while moving away from Stone Age solutions, will be successful in fighting climate change.'
